General Rules and Regulations

 

• Performance order will be determined by random draw

• ALL directors MUST fully complete the required registration forms

• Group levels allowed to perform are:

  • Middle School

  • High School

  • Open Category

Performance Rules

​

• Time will be 14 minutes of performances per group plus 5 minute set up/line check time

  • Competition clock starts on first note & stops on last note

• Groups can begin their performance as soon as they are ready.

• 1st song must be instrumental (any style below) Full Band

• No popurris allowed

• Groups are required to perform the following styles & should not be repeated

  • Ranchera ; Cumbia ; Bolero ; Huapango

• Only performers and directors are allowed back stage and on stage

Judging and Scoring

• Groups will be judged on the following:

  • Musical Arrangement

  • Individual Instruments/Vocals

  • Technique

  • Stage Presentation

  • Overall Group Performance

 

Points and Deductions

​

• 1-6 ; 6.5-10 [After 6 points the .5 (half) point system may be used]

• Time Deductions (exceeding the allowed time):

  • 1-5 seconds - 2 points

  • 6-10 seconds - 3 points

  • 11-15 seconds - 4 points

• Repeating Style of Music: 5 point deduction

 

Tie-Breaker

​

If two groups are tied, a tie breaker will take place to include:

• One song “face-off” (Must be a new song not performed in the original set)

Sound and Production Rules

 

• Set up will be the same for all groups (see stage plot).

• All groups will play using the sound levels during sound check. However, the sound engineer may adjust levels and his discretion. All levels will be reset back to "base" at the end of the performance.

• Only designated staff is allowed in the sound booth area.

• Groups may not leave equipment or personal items in the backstage area after performance

• The following equipment will be on stage for all groups to use:

  • Drum set (Basic set up without snare or cymbals - stands will be provided)

  • Congas

• Sound Equipment:

  • 5 Vocal Mics / Accordion

  • Bass Amp

  • 6 stage monitors will include Side Fills

  • NO WIRELESS-Everything with cable
